THE BIG SPLASH!
Instagram Takeover for UP Photographers
please have a look at my selection for the summer theme The Big Splash!
https://www.instagram.com/upphotographers/
Summer's here. And what is more fitting for these days than pictures of the cool wet, of bathing, of bathing pleasures, of people at pools, beaches, lakes?
Summer is different this year than usual, but water attracts people as always and you can go swimming even in Corona times. (at least here in Germany - for those who have not yet regained the freedom to go to pools or other water, these are at least images of longing - for a "normal" life)
Water has one thing in common all over the world: it makes people happy, you can dive into another world. Places with water are often social places where people meet, relax, have fun and simply enjoy spending time alone or with others.
And it is a visually exciting place for photographers. And so much for me.
This topic is my favourite photographic subject myself, and therefore a matter of the heart.

Northern Drifting

In 2015, Julia Baier travelled to Iceland. In this new black and white series she responds to the Icelandic landscape in a very unusual way.
Iceland is set on two continental plates that are drifting apart, while in this process shaking the grounds, causing volcanoes to erupt and water to boil. The landscape is extreme; black lava rocks meet snow, moss meets solid slabs of stone, hot waters meet cold air. Julia Baier found a photographic equivalent for this brittleness in imagery creations that come into being through the use of the panorama function of her cell phone camera. She took pictures of Iceland while using the car’s motion instead of her own, which resulted in wayward pictures.
The camera drifts, reinvents, copies arbitrarily, omits, condenses time – realistic pieces of the rolling landscape are capsulated with the ragged, accidential fragments and hence, form new, unusual landscapes. The outcome are mysterious pictures with almost painted or filmlike qualities that question our way of looking at nature while seeming to complete the myths that surround Iceland on a pictorial level – and besides point to the fragility of today’s nature.

Northern Drifting
(2016)

In 2000, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen was looking for a new orchestra photographer – and they found her on the beach at Bremerhaven. The orchestra had invited students of photography from the University of the Arts Bremen to take shots of them at a concert.
They voted to work with Julia Baier.
Since then, she has accompanied the orchestra on its road to success as it receives rapturous applause on the world’s major stages for its radical new interpretations of classical works.
For the first time, the photographer will exhibit a hundred - mostly unpublished - pictures of the world-famous orchestra.
The work will also be published as a book in July:

WATER MATTERS
›Swimming is a delicate balance between flying and sinking‹
This quote by Burkhard Strassmann opens Julia Baier's book ›Water Matters‹. Her pictures show what people do with water, and even more, how water affects people and the animals, too. Not on the whole, but in the immediate encounter. When bathing, diving, splashing and spraying, in rain, snow and ice, in the city and in the countryside.
And as the water itself the photographer seems to get to wherever it flows and foams, drips, bubbles and reflects or where the water and its derivatives form into mysterious and beautiful abstractions - in Budapest or Bremen, in Passau or Paris, Chicago or Sovata.
J
